Balayage vs Ombre – What’s the Difference?

If you are like most, you are probably rolling your eyes right about now. But is there actually a difference between the two techniques?

Well, in a nutshell, the two terms are used interchangeably by most people. However, there really is a difference between the two. So, let’s get into the details.

Before we get started, just know, these low-maintainence hair color techniques are all the rage right now. If you’ve never had these treatments, now is the time to give them a try!

What is Balayage?

You guessed it: Another French term. In this case, balayage is the French word meaning, “sweep.” As it pertains to hair, it’s about the technique used to apply color.

Simply put, it’s a technique used to apply color that doesn’t use foils. Instead, your hair stylist will hand paint color directly onto select strands of hair.

This is a much more custom technique and allows your stylist to really do something unique with your hair.

Unlike traditional highlights, balayage focuses more on the ends of your hair and a landing technique that will allow your roots to grow out while ensuring your color continues to look fresh and maintained.

What is Ombré Hair Color?

Ombré is more about the end result vs. a technique. Unlike balayage, which is more of an umbrella term for the technique, it is a more drastic version with harder defined lines for coloring.

Ombré is a French word meaning, “to shade.” When applied, color or lightener is used and applied horizontally to the hair. It is then blended upward to give that faded look or appearance. The top of your scalp will remain dark at the roots, leading to a nice color gradient.

This is a beautiful way to add color to your hair and keep maintenance to a minimum.

Sombré is a more subtle version of ombré using the same process, but using a much more subtle color transition from roots to end.
